Firhad Hakim's son-in-law joins Congress; claims lack of importance in TMC

Yasir Haider, the son-in-law of Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, has made a significant political shift by joining the Congress party. Leaving behind his association with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), Yasir formally joined hands with Pradesh Congress President Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in an event today. Previously, Yasir held the position of state secretary within TMC's Youth wing.

Yasir Haider's decision to switch parties comes amid reports of strained relations with his wife, Priyadarshini, Firhad Hakim's daughter, leading to ongoing divorce proceedings. In the past, Yasir had also been embroiled in controversies, including a controversy involving a trip abroad with an actress. Accusations of multiple overseas trips and alleged money laundering through Yasir have surfaced, resulting in an Enforcement Directorate notice to Priyadarshini. However, Yasir contends that no allegations against him have been proved.

Attributing his move to lack of recognition within TMC, Yasir stated that he felt undervalued, being perceived more as a philanthropist than a leader. During the announcement, Yasir shared, "TMC did not offer me a ticket in 2021. I formally left TMC in March that year and have since been less active in politics. Now, I aim to re-engage with the National Congress. I appreciate the opportunity Congress is granting me and am motivated by Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. I aspire to contribute as a dedicated worker of the Congress party."
